Instructional media is a tool used by teacher to deliver materials for students. The use of instructional media can help teachers to encourage students‟ motivation, to facilitate the process of teaching learning and to achieve the learning objectives. Particularly in online learning, instructional media help the teacher to present the learning which done indirectly. This research aimed: (1) to find out the instructional media used in English teaching by online learning at SMP Negeri 4 Samarinda, (2) to know the teachers‟ reasons for using instructional media in English teaching by online learning at SMP Negeri 4 Samarinda, and (3) to describe the problems faced by the teachers inimplementing instructional media by online learning at SMP Negeri 4 Samarinda.
This research used descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were three English teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Samarinda. The research data collection was carried out through interview, observation, and documentation. Moreover, the data analysis technique were data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/ verification.
The data results showed that: (1) The teachers used Powerpoint, Youtube video, music video clip, voice note, song, and picture as instructional media in English teaching by online learning. (2) The the teachers‟ reasons used instructional media were it could be a means of delivering messages and subject matter provided, the media was easy to use both for teachers and students, the media could be repeated, the media could facilitate the students to do assignments, and kept the learning objectives achieved even though the learning was carried out online. (3) In addition, there were some problems that teachers faced in implemented instructional media by online learning. There was still a lack of knowledge of the technology development, the students did not have sufficient communication tools in the form of smartphones, internet packages, and good signals to support learning, the students did not always give a good response in learning, the students felt bored to learn, the teachers could not monitor the learning process and control students, and the teachers could not implemented many types of media due to the limitations of students to access them.
