English is important to be learned by people in the world, included Indonesian students. Learning a second language is a long and complex undertaking. It is because students will learn new language, a new culture, a new way of thinking, feeling, and acting. Moreover many students claim they are less brave to speak in front of class orpeople. They are less brave of failure and feel others is better than himself. In case of foreign language learning, student emotions tend to be more discourageing rather than encourageing. One of the emotional states that make such process become difficult is anxiety. Emotional states such as anxiety can distract students in the language learning process. Feeling of tension, worry, and nervousness will impact students’ ability to perform successfully in speaking foreign language. Anxiety is a real problem that happens in every single moment when students speak in a foreign language, This research purposes was to know 1) How far the correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking skill at the fifth semester of English education at IAIN Samarinda. and 2) The correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking skill at the fifth semester of English education at IAIN Samarinda.
This research was quantitative approach with correlation research. This research had two variable; independents variable (Variable X) was students’ anxiety, and dependents variable (variable Y) was students speaking skill. The research sample consists of 50 students. The data of students anxiety were collected by using questionnaire which was adopted from foreign Language Classroom Anxiety of Horwitz, Horwitz and Cope at FLCA, while the data of students’ speaking skill was collected from the lectures when they were teaching at the first semester in Advance Speaking course. SPSS Program by used to exixst to researcher to analysis the data of normality, linearity, and person product moment. After those analyses, the researcher conduct t-test to know wheather or not variable X and variable Y have a correlation.
Based on researcher showed that r-score was 0.062. It means that the correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking skill is low level. Then t-score was 0.4 and t-table is 2.02 with a significant 5%. It means Null Hypothesis was accepted and Alternative Hypothesis was rejected.
To sum up, this research found that the correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking skill is low level. Last, there was no correlation between students’ anxiety and speaking skill at the fifth semester of English Education, at State Islamic Institut of Samarinda. | en_US |
