Nowdays, English becomes one of compulsory subjects at all of schools in Indonesia (English as Foreign Language/EFL classroom). Supposedly, English classroom uses English as instruction. However, as multilingual society sometimes teacher and students find the situation that makes them speak Indonesian. The code-switching phenomenon has become very handy for teacher with students from diverse cultures. English teacher uses English in explaining the materials and sometimes switch the explanation into Indonesian. This research described code switching in teaching process in the classsroom. The aims of this research were to investigate the types of code switching in the classroom.
This research used qualitative research design. The subject is English teacher of SMA Plus Melati Samarinda. the research used observation and interview as the instrument of the research. The technique of data analysis that the researcher used in this research is data reducion, data display, conclusion drawing or verification.
Based on the data analysis, showed that the types of code switching were found in three types: inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, and tag switching. The most frequently code switching type practiced by the teacher was inter-sentential switching. The teacher practiced code switching in order to help the students in delivering materials. | en_US |
