The background of this research about some teacher's difficulties in teaching writing. Besides conducting writing assessment is to get what the curriculum requires, for the teachers and students, writing assessment can show them the improvement of the students’ skill. The teachers can get a draw about how far the students’ skill has been developed. The purpose of research to investigate the teacher’s difficulties in teaching writing to the eighth grade students and their strategies to overcome the difficulties. The participant of the study is one English teacher at a Junior High School in Samarinda. This was a descriptive case study using qualitative method as the approach. The data in this study was collected using one technique is interview.
In this research the researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative research is conducted through intense and/or prolonged contact with participants in a naturalistic setting to investigate the everyday and/or exceptional live of individuals, groups, societies, and organization.
This research yielded two results. In teaching writing, the teachers faced six difficulties. Those difficulties were related to the students, to the teachers, to the writing itself, and to the school’s policy. The results of this research indicate that the main difficulty of teachers in teaching writing is the lack of vocabulary of students, teachers must keep abreast of the development of students' needs and conditions by updating their knowledge and skills.
