Collocation concern with how words go together, which words may occur in construction with which other words. Words alone are rarely conveying full meaning, there must be a sort of combination or attachment to convey the full meaning. In addition, to fully understand the way of combining words must be more pay attention to vocabulary acquisition. Learning vocabulary is seen as a key element to achieve a high level of proficiency in the target language by a large number of theoreticians. EFL learners are expected to pay close attention to the mastery of the collocation along with the mastery of vocabulary to help them understand better the target language. Therefore, according to Farrokh, one of the most difficult tasks of foreign language or second language learners is collocation. Also, the objectives of this study are to find out the types of lexical collocations presented in articles of CNN Heroes and to identify the most dominant type of lexical collocation used in articles.
This research design in this research is descriptive qualitative method and content analysis. These methods are used to find out the types of lexical collocation and to identify the dominant type of lexical collocation in the articles of CNN Heroes. The researcher uses Benson et al. theories to analyze the types of lexical collocation in articles. The data source was taken from 4 articles of CNN Heroes and the data of the research was lexical collocation words used in the articles. In this research, the instrument is the researcher herself because she actively obtains and gathers the data. In data analysis the researcher uses the analysis model by Miles and Huberman theories that consist of three steps, namely; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/ verification.
Based on the analysis, First, the researcher found there are 33 English lexical collocations in five types of lexical collocation in the articles of CNN Heroes. There were 8 collocations in (L1), 15 collocations in (L3), 1 collocation in (L4), 3 collocations in (L5), and 6 collocations in (L6). Second, the most dominant type of lexical collocation that found in articles of CNN Heroes was L3 (Adjective + Noun).
