Besides Indonesian, English is also a language that must be mastered by Indonesians. In learning English, there are four skills that must be mastered, namely, speaking, listening, reading and writing. Among language skills, speaking is one of the skills that must be mastered. While learning to speak, students deal with several problems. The objectives of the research is to know the problems of speaking ability at eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Samarinda academic year 2018/2019
This research used qualitative research. The main instruments were test and questionnaire. The technique of collecting data was speaking assessment. The data analysis technique used percentage formula. The rubric speaking assessment was from David P. Harris. The topic of the test was describing people. The questionnaire consists of 25 items. The questionnaire had given to the students at eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Samarinda that consists of 36 students.
The result of this research finding was the problems of speaking ability at eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Samarinda. Problems of seaking exist in all components of the speaking. In vocabulary mastery, students got 47.2% in poor levels and 19.4% in very poor levels. In grammar mastery, students got 38.8% in poor and very poor. Then students got 36.1% at the mediocre level in the pronunciation mastery. Students also got 38.8% at the poor level in fluency mastery. For comprehension mastery students got 41.1% at the very poor level. Another problems were lack of language experience, lack of confidence and the lack of the teacher's role in learning speaking English.
