Writing English has been a difficulty for many people, it is not exception for students in Junior High School. Some students do not have good enough knowledge to be able to write. Most of students in Junior High School are used to do errors in writing. They do not understand how to arrange the words or sentences by using sentence patterns well. Therefore, this research identifies students’ sentence formation that is usually called syntax in linguistics. The researcher focuses on the basic sentence pattern errors that made by students. The objectives of this research are to find out the sentence pattern errors made by the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Samarinda in writing recount text and to know the cause of errors made by the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Samarinda in writing recount text.
The researcher used the descriptive qualitative research design. The source of data was the students’ recount text writing that match with the determined criteria. The researcher chose 10 students’ writing. The instrument of this research used test and questionnaire. Researcher asked students to write recount text and gave them questionnaire to know the students response. It would be able to answer the cause of error that students made. The researcher analysed the students’ worksheet about their sentence pattern errors in writing recount text.
The result of the study showed that seven sentence pattern errors from 10 patterns that found in this research. From 10 students, they made 22 times error in pattern 6 (S – IV). Then, the students made 15 times errors in pattern 2 (S – be – PA). The other pattern was less than 10 errors that made by students. It means that pattern 6 (S – IV) was the most syntactic sentence pattern errors made by the students. The cause of students’ errors was target language. There were 60% of students agree that target language brought them in making the error. They felt that English sentence patterns were difficult to learn. They could not understand the sentence pattern well.
