Learning English ideally consists of four skills. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reading and writing are two activities that link each other. Simple way to say it is in order to write, we need to read. Reading is a very important skill for success at third level. Reading actively promotes understanding, increases concentration and improves retention.
This research was conducted on teacher and the eighth grade students at MTs Al Mujahidin Samarinda. In this research, the researcher wanted to know the problems in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of MTs Al Mujahidin in academic year 2017/2018.
The type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The focus of this research was to describe the problems in reading faced by teacher and the eighth grade students at MTs AL Mujahidin Samarinda. The sample in this research is VIII-A, and VIII-B students. The subject in this research are the students and a teacher. The data were obtained through it was found observation and interview.
Based on the observation and interview, teacher and the students faced some problems related to expressing meaning in simple short conversations, grammar, vocabulary and understand the meaning of simple functional text and short essay for the students and teacher faced some problems related to teaching reading activity. The observation also showed additional findings where students faced other problems, namely: low self-confidence, afraid of making mistakes, lazy bring a dictionary, shyness to speak and bored in the class. There are some factors resulting problems of reading to the students, they are lack of reading habit, do not pay attention to the teacher, do not have the motivation, do not like learning to speak English, confusion in applying grammar rules and does not solve the problems.
