S1 Thesis, Samarinda: Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty of English Program. IAIN Samarinda. First Advisor: Dr.Umar Fauzan, M.Pd and Second Advisor: Dini Irawati, M.Pd. This research discusses the effectiveness of total physical response in teaching vocabulary to fifth grade students. Vocabulary is a basic component in a language. Without vocabulary, the people cannot communicate effectively or express his idea in both oral and written forms. Teacher cannot teach the students only bring a book, come to the classroom, and give explanation, then the student’s just listen to the teacher. There are many ways to reach the goals of teaching vocabulary from the techniques, methods, and media. Moreover, there are many ways to make learning process more active and fun. Total physical response is one of English teaching method that can be use in teaching vocabulary because total physical response can make learning process in the class more alive, and then the students will enjoy activity in the class. The purpose of this research find whether the students taught vocabulary using total physical response method have better vocabulary achievement than the students taught without total physical response. The research methodology of the research is posttest only- control group design in taking the data. The population of this research was the fifth grade students of SDN 007 Muara Jawa. The class V B and V A conducted in this research, where the V B was experimental group and the V A was control group. Total number of population was fifty students. This research showed that the mean score of students’ post test in experimental group was 83,04, while the mean score of students’ post test in control group was 76. In order to examine the hypothesis whether it was accepted or rejected, the researcher used t-test. After computing the two mean scores by t-test formula, it is found that the value of the t_score was 2,9704 and the value of the t_table was 2,0106. The value of the t-test was bigger than the value of t_table with 5% of significance level (2,9704 ≥ 2,0106). It showed that the alternative hypothesis (h_a) was accepted and the null hypothesis (h_o) was rejected. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (h_a) which stated that the students who taught vocabulary using total physical response was better than the students who taught vocabulary without total physical response.en_US
