Speaking is a complicated language skill of communication ability, because this activity does not stand alone, as it involves various aspects not only pronunciation but also grammatical aspect. The problem frequently found are the students have lack of confidence and bashful because they do not have any chance to practice orally in a big class, the teacher used techniques monotonously so the classroom is not conducive in conversation class, in fact the students have lack of vocabulary and really difficult to memorize some new vocabularies.
The research was conducted at SMK Al-Azhar Samarinda. The subject of this research is the students at The Eleventh Grade of SMK Al-Azhar Samarinda in second semester that consists of 14 students. The purpose of this research was improving students’ speaking ability by using role play at the eleventh grade of SMK Al-Azhar Samarinda. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is adapted from Kurt Lewin’s design. It consists of two cycles in which each cycle contains four phases; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The criteria of success of this research is 75% of students get test-score is 75. Based on standard score criteria for minimum completion (KKM) and most of students actively involved during teaching and learning process. In collecting data, the researcher used observation checklist, observation sheet, questionnaire and test.
The findings of the research showed that the students’ speaking score from preliminary score to cycle I and cycle II were increasing significantly. Based on criteria of success of this research, the students’ speaking score improved if 75% of students got score above Criteria for Minimum Completion (75) and most of students actively involved during teaching and learning process. In cycle I, the students’ average score was 73,8. It meant that there were 7 students or 50 % were passed and 7 students or 50% got score below criteria for minimum completion. In cycle II, the students’ average score was 77,3. It meant that there were 11 students or 79% were passed and 3 students or 21% got score below criteria for minimum completion. There are significant improvements on the students’ ability in performing speaking and the students’ activeness in teaching and learning process. The students’ speaking ability was increased through role play technique. Dealing with the students’ activeness as another aspect in criteria of success, the result of the observation sheet, and observation checklist showed that most of students were actively involved in teaching and learning process.
