Under Graduate Degree English Education Department Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty State Islamic Institute of Samarinda. Under guidance, Shafa, M.Pd as the first advisor and Sari Agung Sucahyo, M.Pd as the second advisor.
The background of this research is based on phenomenon that VIIIB Class students’ of SMP Negeri 2 Loa Kulu in 2016/2017 year ability in listening needs to be improved. Some of them, there were 68% or 17 students who got score under 75 and there were 32% or 8 students who got score above criteria for minimum completion. The use English movies trailer in teaching listening is expected to increase students’ listening ability. Thus, it will give positive outcome toward the problem.
The research problem of this research is how English movie trailer can improve students’ listening ability in the second grade of SMP Negeri 2 Loa Kulu in 2016/2017 year. The aim of this research is to explain how to improve students listening ability using English movies trailer.
The subject of this research is the eighth grade consist of 25 students in SMP Negeri 2 Loa Kulu. This is a classroom action research. The instrument are test, observation sheet, field notes and questionnaire. The research technique in collecting the data is descriptive quantitative.
Based on the research, the result of this research showed that in the pre cycle, the students’ average score was 65. In the first cycle, the students’ average score was 74,2. It means that there was a progress of students’ achievement after being taught movies trailer. In the second cycle, the students’ average score was 80 and also they actively during the teaching and learning process that were seen based on field notes, observation sheet and questionnaire.
The result of this research showed that, the criteria of success of this research are the students’ listening ability using English trailer movies improve if 70% of students get score test 75 and most of students get satisfactory scoring criteria and actively involved during teaching and learning process. The result of this research showed that 76% of students got score test above 75 and dealing with the students’ activeness as another aspect in the criteria of success, the result of the field notes, observation sheet and questionnaire showed the most students get good scoring criteria and actively involved in teaching and learning process. It means that the used English movies trailer to improve students’ listening ability is successfully improve students’ listening ability at the second grade of SMP Negeri 2 Loa Kulu.
