Abstract
Mh Ikhlasul Hibban, 2024. “The Effectiveness of Role Play to Teach Speaking for Eighth Grade Students at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Samarinda in Academic Year of 2023/2024.” Thesis, Language Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research was supervised by Mr. Dr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd as the first supervisor, and Miss Anis Komariah, M.Pd as the second supervisor. The background of the research is that students did not practice their speaking skills in the learning process because the English teacher did not apply any method for students' speaking practice. This research was conducted to obtain empirical data about the effectiveness of role-playing on the students’ speaking ability in the eighth grade at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Samarinda. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. The population of this research included 44 students, and the two classes consisted of 22 students each. The sample of this research was the eighth-grade students of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Samarinda. They were class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. Each class consisted of 22 students. For the sampling technique, the researcher used stratified proportional cluster sampling. The instrument used in this research was an oral test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the T-test formula to analyze student achievement by conducting pre- and post-tests. The results showed that most students obtained good scores after treatment. The average pre-test score of students in the experimental class was 56.63, while the average post-test score was 78.45. On the other hand, the average pre-test score of students in the control class was 75.95, and the average post-test score was 76.63. There was a significant difference in the post-test mean score of students in the experimental class treated using role play, which was higher than the post-test score of the control class treated without using role play. The result of the statistical hypothesis test found that at a 5% significance level, the tobservation was 30.20 while the ttable with df = 42 was 2.018 or tobservation > ttable. Therefore, H₀ (Null Hypothesis) was rejected and Hₐ (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted. It proves that role play is effective in teaching speaking.
