It is said that reading is the path to succes in school life. One who is not able to read will not able to succed. Those who are good readers are able to expand their views, experiences and thoughts. Living in a largely literate society, we are surrounded by written materials covering almost all aspects of our lives. Examples of written materials are newspapers, books, journals, magazines and other electronic sources which are written in english is guide us to know more about what happen in another country since English is an international language. It is easy for us to understand to read those written materials if we have a good mastery in vocabulary.
The objective of this research is to find out whether there is correlation between Students’ English Reading Habit and their Vocabulary Mastery of Fifth Semester of English Education Program Student in State Islamic Institute of Samarinda in Academic Year 2017/2018.
The method used in this research is a quantitative research and it designed in a correlational study. The population of this study was students of fifth semester in of English Education Program at IAIN Samarinda in academic year 2017/2018, but the researcher only took 30 as samples. The data of the students are collected through simple random sampling technique. Questionnaires and test are used as the instruments of this research. First of all, reading habit questionnaire are given to the student. The aim of this questionnaire is to know the students’ reading habit score. Second, test of vocabulary mastery is conducted to measure students’ vocabulary mastery. Then, the researcher analyze the correlation by using Pearson’s Product Moment Formula.
The result of this research shows that the t-test is 0.735 and t-table is 2. 048 at 5% of significant level. It means t-test is lower than t-table (0.735 < 2.048). Based on the research analysis above can be concluded that there is not any correlation between students’ reading habit and their vocabulary mastery of fifth semester of English Education program student at IAIN Samarinda in academic year 2017/2018. | en_US |
