Vocabulary is one of the important elements in learning English. Students have lack of vocabulary because in the learning process the English teacher still uses teacher-centered, where the teacher plays a very active role in controlling learning so that students are generally only passive or accept whatever is given by the teacher. The objectives of this research were to ascertain whether or not English songs at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sangasanga are increasing students’ vocabulary mastery and to ascertain whether there is any significant effect in students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sangasanga after taught using English songs.
This research used a quantitative quasi-experimental method. The population of this research was whole students at the eighth grade included seven classes consisting of 210 students. The sample of this research was the eighth grade; they were VIII C as the experimental class and VIII F as the control one. Each class consisted of 30 students. For sampling technique, the researcher used non-probability sampling technique. The instrument used in this research was a written test in the form of multiple-choice questions. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Mann-Whitney formula to analyze students’ learning outcomes, by conducting pre-test and post-test.
The result of this research showed that most of students have gained good scores after the treatment, it was 86. The students’ pre-test average score in experimental class was 61.33 while the post-test average score was 86.66. In the control class, the students’ average pre-test score was 58.8 and the post-test average score was 67.8. There was a significant difference of students’ post-test average score of the experimental class which was treated by using English songs was greater than the post-test of the control class which was treated without using English songs. The result of statistical hypotheses test found out that the Asymp. Sig. value of the experimental class increased as indicated by a 2-tailed p value of 0.001, less than the 5% threshold (0.05) rejecting the null hypothesis (H₀). Therefore, the H₀ was rejected and the Hₐ was accepted. It proved that English songs increase students’ vocabulary mastery.
