THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING MIND MAPPING IN ENGLISH VOCABULARY LEARNING FOR ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT MA DARUL IHSAN SAMARINDA

The objectives of this research were to find out if there was an increase in students' vocabulary mastery in English vocabulary learning after the application of mind mapping and to find out how effective the application of mind mapping is in students' English vocabulary learning. Tony Buzan, who was the first to popularized mind mapping, state that mind mapping is a learning method that put ideas into a structured map so that it can be easily understood. Mind mapping uses creativity as the basis for its creation so that it is interesting to read repeatedly.

This research used a quasi-experimental method with a quantitative approach. The subjects of this research were eleventh grade students, and the sample of this study was class XI-1 as the experimental class and class XI-3 as the control class. The instrument used was 25 questions of multiple-choice test, which was given in two stages, namely pre-test and post-test, to measure students' vocabulary mastery before and after treatment.

The research finding showed that the application of mind mapping had a significant positive impact on students' vocabulary mastery. The average score of students in the experimental group increased by 35.3 points, while the control group only increased by 27.1 points. Normality and homogeneity tests were conducted to ensure that the data obtained met statistical requirements, and the results showed that the data were not normally distributed and homogeneous. Therefore, the Mann-Whitney test was conducted to analyze the significant differences between the two groups. The results of this test showed a significance value of <0.05, which indicated that the mind mapping strategy was significantly more effective than conventional methods in improving students' vocabulary mastery in English Vocabulary Learning.
