English is one of the most important language of the world. In learning English, Speaking is one of the basic skill that have to be mastered. Speaking skill is very important because it can help us to communicate with other people in the world. There are some media that can be applied, such as picture series. This media can help students in speaking English. This thesis is aimed to find out whether the picture series is effective to improve students’ speaking ability of SMK TI Labbaika Samarinda in academic year 2017/2018.
The design of the research was experimental research. The focus of this research was to find out a significant effect of Picture Series towards the second grade students’ speaking ability of SMK TI Labbbaika Samarinda between students who was taught by using picture series and who was taught without picture series. The subject of this research was the second grade students of SMK TI Labbaika Samarinda. In this research, the researcher took two classes, there are experimental and control class. It means that 68 students as the sample from two classes the subject of research. The data were conducted by tests which were delivered into the pre-test and the post-test.
The result of the research showed that the significant of t-table was 1.690. Df = 66, and then, t-test = 2.33 It means t-test > t-table or 2.33 > 1.690. Based on the significance result above, Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. In conclusion, there is a significance effect of students’ speaking ability between students who were taught by using picture series and who were taught without using picture series. So, the difference on mean indicates that the use of picture series is better than without picture series.
