STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN COMPREHENDING NARRATIVE TEXT OF TENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT MAN 1 SAMARINDA IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023

This research is under the guidance of Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first advisor and Ms. Anis Komariah, M.Pd as the second advisor.
In narrative learning, students are required to know the generic structure, find explicit and implicit information, and must be able to understand the content of the text to answer questions from the teacher and formulate moral messages. This research objectives are to find the problems that students face in comprehending narrative text of tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Samarinda in academic year 2022/2023, as well as provide several solutions to those problems.
This research used descriptive qualitative methods. The subjects of this research were tenth-grade students at MAN 1 Samarinda that took purposive sampling with some criteria. The data were collected using an interview, observation, and documentation. Then, for data analysis, the researcher used data analysis from Miles, Huberman, and Saldana.
The findings of this research discovered that students face problems in comprehending narrative texts, including difficulties in interpreting words, processing information, determining general structure, grammar, and vocabulary, and lacking of motivation in English learning. Moreover, the solutions to solve students’ problems in comprehending narrative text include using video media or media that arouse students' enthusiasm, creating study groups, allowing students to choose text titles they like, and exploring vocabulary using Android.
