Language is not only used for daily conversation, but also used in education, technology, science and research. In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language which it must be learned by students from junior high school until university. Reading is one important way which can increase the students’ general language skills in English, reading can improve the vocabulary, the writing and the speaking skills and also finding out the new ideas, facts and experiences. Using short stories in the classroom is to entertain and to enrich mental experience with imagination, they keep interest alive in the classroom and motivate students, they have factual and cultural values. Various way stories in foreign language classroom help to develop vocabulary also.
The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using short story to increase students’ vocabulary in reading at third grade students of MTs Al Mujahidin 2 Samarinda have better vocabulary achievement than the students taught without short story.
The design of this research is true experimental research design. It used two classes, experimental class (IXA) and control class (IXB). The population of this research was the third grade of MTs Al Mujahidin 2 Samarinda in academic year 2016 – 2017. Total population was fourty-seven students. This research used reading test inform multiple choice in a try-out test, and the result of try out test used in post test.
This research showed that the experimental class given treatment using short story in teaching reading skill got higher mean score was 78 compared with the control class who did not get treatment using short story to teach reading skill was 67. Based on the t-test formula with significance level 5% it is found that t_score 2,477 with t_table 2,014. Because count table t_score ≥ t_table, so there is significant difference between result of the effectiveness of using short story to increase students’ vocabulary in reading with not using short story.
