Listening is one of the four language skills because the first step someone learns a language is by listening to the language. Listening is an activity of listening and trying to understand the meaning. Most students experience difficulties during the listening process. It can occur due to a lack of mastery of words and inadequate supporting facilities. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher determined the difficulties students face in listening to English in MTs. Darul Muta’alimin Samarinda Academic Year 2022/2023.
The method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive method. The instruments used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. Data collection was conducted through interview answers. The subjects of this research were students of class VIII at MTs. Darul Muta’alimin Samarinda, with 30 students as respondents.
Based on the results of this research, the researcher found that the difficulties faced by students in listening to English were caused by: first, the low-quality recording material affected the students’ ability to understand the material; second, unfamiliar vocabulary related to students’ lack of knowledge about their vocabulary; third, physical condition problems related to uncomfortable classroom conditions causing students to lose focus in learning English listening; fourth, noise problems associated with the noise around them, loss of concentration, and lack of vocabulary knowledge which made it difficult for them to listen to the material; and lastly, the lack of concentration caused by a noisy environment from inside or outside the classroom, resulting in students focusing less on listening to the sound from the speakers. | en_US |
