Listening is simple considerant as an adjunct of speaking. Tape programs contained, models for repetition, cues for spoken drills and recordings of reading selection. When the researcher observed MTs Sulaiman Yasin Samarinda, to improve the students’ listening, the English teacher give some command sentences and orders the students to do what have ordered. But the students felt depressed of the way to teach them. This method would make students get bored and depressed to listen anything what teacher said.
The research was conducted at MTs Sulaiman Yasin Samarinda. The subject of this research were the students at Seventh Grade of MTs Sulaiman Yasin Samarinda in second semester that consists of 26 students. The purpose of this research was to improve students’ listening skill by using total physical response method at seventh grade of MTs Sulaiman Yasin Samarinda. The design of this research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was adapted from Kurt Lewin’s design. It consists of two cycles in which each cycle contains four phases; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The criteria of success of this research were 70% of students get score test 75.
Based on standard score criteria for minimum completion (KKM) and most of students actively involved during teaching and learning process. In collecting data, the researcher used observation sheet, field note, and test. Based on the result of the research, it could be concluded that the students’ listening score from preliminary score to cycle I and cycle II was increasing significantly. Based on criteria of success of this research, the students’ listening score improved if 70% of students got score above criteria for minimum completion (75) and most of students actively involved during teaching and learning process. In cycle I, the sudents’ average score was 73. It meant that there were 15 students or 58% were passed and 8 students or 31% got score below criteria for minimum completion. In cycle II, the students’ average score was 76,53. It meant that there were 20 students or 77% were passed and 3 students or 12% got score below criteria for minimum completion. There were significant improvement on the students’ skill in performing listening and the students’ activeness in teaching and learning process. The students’ listening skill was increased through total physical response method. Dealing with the students’ activeness as another aspect in criteria of success, the result of observation sheet showed that most of students were actively involved in teaching and learning process | en_US |
