This thesis was conducted based on the research problems that still many students at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Samarinda had problems in English vocabulary. Based on the observation on February 19, 2020 in the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Samarinda, the researcher found that most students still have difficulties in learning vocabulary. In addition vocabulary is the main material of English lesson in Junior High School. The problems are the students had difficulty to remember the vocabulary, especially in remembering the meaning of vocabularies. The students are also often wrong in writing the vocabularies, they often wrote the words as they heard. Moreover, the students were not interested in English class because teachers who teach in class only use books and blackboard as teaching media. The objective of this research was to know the effectiveness of teaching English vocabulary by using realia at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Samarinda in academic year 2019/2020. The researcher used quasi experimental design that focuses on activities in the classroom. Subjects examined were 61 respondents from seventh grade students. The research instrument used by the researcher is (1) pre-test, (2) treatment, and (3) post-test. In this research, the researcher used realia as a media of teaching English vocabulary to find out whether the technique can improve vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Samarinda in academic year 2019/2020. Based on the result of post-test, the mean score of experimental class was 84.70 and the mean score of post-test control class was 77.94. The experimental class post-test score was higher than the control class. The result analysis of tvalue is 3.745 and ttable is 2.001. It means that tvalue is higher than ttable (tvalue > ttable), Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that using realia was effective to improve students’ vocabulary at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 3 Samarinda.
